Recurrent renal stones, light on Ayurvedic approach integrating the modern knowledge.

15.5mm ureteric stone in a 45 years old male was expelled easily with Ayurvedic combination. Earlier he took intravenous fluids for 5 days in modern hospital, and was advised to go for surgery. He refused to for surgery and got admitted in our hospital. I have treated him with our Ayurvedic diuretic Uronorm syrup 25 ml 4th hourly and tablet Calculus 16, 2 tablets thrice daily. Stone expelled on 3rd day. Considering the size of the stone expulsion was with minimum pain.

  

In Ayurveda renal stone is called as Muthrashmari, which refers with vesical or bladder stones. In Ancient Ayurveda there was no knowledge of Renal and ureteric stones, they could not trace the link between kidney and urinary bladder. But in present days Ayurveda we treat renal stones, ureteric stones and also bladder stones. The specialty of Ayurveda treatment is in preventing recurrent renal stones which is seen in many patients.

The main two causes for stone formation are

1. Super saturation of urine-Main causes are low fluid intake and low renal out put is the main cause.

2. Deposition of stone material on a renal papillary calcium phosphate nidus, typically a Randall plaque (which are always composed of calcium phosphate). In this type the main causes are excess excretion of calcium or phosphate in urine usually due to some secondary disease like hyper parathyroidism, excess dietery intake of calcium or over absorption of calcium in intestine, hormonal causes like in Menopause.

Main types of stones are

1.     Calcium stones- 75% of all stone.

2.     Mixed stone (magnesium ammonium phosphate stone or struvite stone)

3.     Uric acid stone

4.     Cystine stone.

Most of the recurrent renal stones are calcium stone. The cause for recurrent stone can be traced in most of the stones by serum and urine analysis and can be treated accordingly to prevent recurrence. 

As per some research study, for recurrent renal stone(calcium stones) in 70% of cases cause is hyper parathyroidism and among them 80% of hyperparathyroidism is due to Adenoma of Parathyroid gland. Parathyroid gland is situated behind thyroid gland which mainly controls calcium metabolism. Adenoma of Parathyroid gland stimulates breakdown of calcium and excess flow of calcium through urine which results in recurrent renal stones. So in patients with excess of calcium phosphate in urine and recurrent renal stones, should not be advised to reduce calcium in their diet instead they should maintain normal level of calcium in their diet but should reduce salt and high protein in their diet.

We have treated many cases of recurrent renal stones, expulsion of renal stones becomes easy with Ayurveda medicines, but earlier we could not prevent recurrent renal stone in many of the cases, after the above knowledge we started to treat recurrent renal stone with anti tumor herbal combination and found dramatic change in such patients. Here I will mention eg of one case who had recurrent renal stones for more than 20 years tried all possible treatment with Allopathy, Ayurveda, Homeopahty etc. About 8 years back he took medicine from me for the same for more than 1 year, but there was no improvement with regards to recurrent renal stone. Once again he came for treatment in 02.09.2009 for the same problem, I asked him to screen parathyroid harmone level but refused to do the test, but agreed to go for ultrasonography of abdomen. He had 5 stones in left side with 5-8mm size and 3 in right side with 4-8 mm range. He was very prompt in following the diet and taking medicines, this time I treated for easy expulsion of stone as well as with anti tumor herbs to treat the possible adenoma of parathyroid gland. After one year of treatment he had only 4 mm stone in lower calyx of his left kidney. Even now he is under treatment and there is no recurrence. He took another USG 2 months back which showed no renal stones. In this case I could not confirm the diagnosis of Parathyroid Adenoma, but the anti tumor treatment worked in the above case. I have treated many cases of recurrent renal stones with new line of treatment, but could not confirm the diagnosis of adenoma of Parathyroid gland because of non availability of tests in nearby place and most of the patients refuse to go for such tests. I got mixed result with the new line of treatment.

The medicines used were

1.     Tablet Calculus 16 tablet 1 tablet thrice daily, a proprietary medicine from Ukkinadkas Ayurveda to treat recurrent renal stones, which also helps in easy expulsion of renal stone. Added with anti tumor herb Kanchanara.

2.     Tablet Cancicare an anti tumor herbal combination. One tablet thrice daily.

Uronorm syrum 25ml twice daily. An proprietary Ayurvedic diuretic from Ukkinadkas Ayurveda, which also helps in easy expulsion of renal stone.

- Osteo arthrosis- In early osteo arthrosis(knee joint pain due to surface erosion is good example for osteo arthrosis) Ayurveda is treatment of choice where recovery is almost 100%, but in advanced case of osteo arthrosis some patient gets good result and now a days knee replacement surgery is the best line of treatment for very severe cases.
